The transition to summer…

For those of us who live on the island full time, Memorial Day weekend can be a shock to the system!

For 6 months out of the year, most of the homes and streets are empty.  We are happy to see lights on and activity during winter holidays and weekends, and grateful for the opportunity to catch up with our seasonal neighbors.

Yet Memorial Day weekend is different.  EVERY house is at full capacity.  EVERY driveway and parking spot is occupied.  And with this beautiful weather, EVERY outside space is in use well into the night!

As you may have guessed with my beach walk pictures, we are early risers (and therefore early to bed). Last night, with our windows open, we could hear the animated conversations from several nearby gatherings!

A peaceful walk on the beach this morning, and then a few deep breaths helped me face my “commute” to work 😉

By Tuesday, we will begin the more gradual transition to summer.
