The Borough of Avalon has announced a solution to wayward trash cans after weekend visits: The 15th Street Borough yard will be open to accept household trash and recycle items on Sundays between 12 noon and 5pm- now through May 18th. The Borough will continue this program in the fall on Sundays between September 14th and December 28th. Great idea!

Children’s Charities of Power Play Realty
In 2005, Tim Kerr and the agents of Power Play Realty established a fund by contributing 1% of all sales commissions. The money is distributed annually to 4 area charities providing services to children.Â
We are proud to support: The Brendan Borek Fund http://www.brendansfund.org/Â ; Cape May County Special Services (receiving a check in the photo below); Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; and The Dreamkeeper Program.
To date, Power Play Realty has contributed over $25,000.Â

Beach vs. Treadmill

I will admit- I was a whimp last week. The cold temperatures and the rain provided daily excuses to skip my walk on the beach…and unfold the treadmill. I convinced myself that I would walk even longer because I could watch TV and be comfortable.
Well, after 15 minutes, I was completely bored. I missed the view (of course), the birds, the roar of the ocean, and the smell of salt air.Â
So, back on track (excuse the pun) this morning. And I was rewarded with an amazing view of the sun over the ocean, and moderate temperatures. Definitely better than TV!

The Big Chill

A bit of snow at the shore this week- and very cold temperatures. But the sun is out and the ocean and beach look beautiful.
Worth the effort to bundle up for a walk! Â

Milestones and Temperatures
Today is my birthday, and Mother Nature gave me the gift of temperatures just above my age. Â Hint- the number was not a record breaker, but higher than average for January!
I have attached a picture of my party on the beach with the birds 🙂

Weather perspective
I was whining yesterday- it was cold and rainy- typical dreary winter day. I was able to walk the beach early- but it wasn’t pleasant. Then, I talked with our son who lives in the mountains of Colorado. They had blizzard conditions and the roads were closed (still closed today!).Â
The sun is back out today…and it is a balmy 40 degrees…so no more complaints (at least for a day or two).
Stay warm…and Happy New Year!

Technical Christmas
Did you notice that most of the gifts this year were electronics or computer related? My 6 year old nephew was thrilled that Santa left a PS3 PDA (a hand held Play Station I was informed!)…pretty scary. My mother was equally thrilled with her new lap top. Â
My 2 favorite gifts combined technology and family: a web cam for our home computer so that I can “visit” our younger son and his family who live in Colorado. And a picture calendar made by my older son- he scanned old photos for 12 months of memories.
Hope your Christmas was merry, too!

Stormy Sunday

High tide along the Stone Harbor beach. Good day to take off from work, bundle up for a long walk (not cold…but very windy!), and then hang around to read the paper with Christmas music on in the background. Maybe the Eagles’ game will be worthwhile, too?!!Â

Christmas Shopping in Stone Harbor
Take advantage of the slower pace and personal service offered by the local shops. Most are open on weekends- and some are open every day. These are a few of my favorite:
Seashore ACE has everything – from decorations to gifts. Hoy’s 5 & 10 is great for children’s gifts. Bellanova has unique woman’s clothing. Fudge Kitchen will mail their delicious gifts anywhere. I always find high quality men’s shirts on sale in Global Pursuit (and sometimes a nice sweater for me!). Pete Smith’s for the teenagers on your list. Ocean Galleries for fine art. I purchased a new bicycle from Harbor Bikes this year- very fair prices. Wet Suit World has items for all water sports enthusiasts- not just surfing. Barrie Shoes for slippers (and maybe a new pair of sneakers for you). The Paisley Christmas Shoppe will personalize an ornament for a special gift. You are sure to find the perfect item in Frog and Toad- especially for the women on your list. Terry Ivory Jewelry- I’m glad my husband discovered this store!
Happy Shopping….

Sweat, Tears, and the Sea
Saw this on a sign at the Frog and Toad- a gift shop on 95th and Third Avenue in Stone Harbor:Â
The cure for anything is salt water – sweat, tears, or the sea. ~Isak Dinesen
I agree!
