  • Sunday Sights

coastguard.jpg  The Stone Harbor Lion’s Club Annual 10K, 5K, and 2 Mile Fun Walk was held this morning.  I was hot just standing there cheering for the runners…can’t imagine actually participating  :)   A crowd favorite- the young men and women of the United States Coast Guard.

  • Tim Kerr 7 Mile/ 5K Run

The annual Tim Kerr Race is scheduled for Sunday, August 31st at 8:30am.  Pre-registration for the race will be held at the Avalon Community Hall on 30th Street Saturday afternoon from 12 noon to 4:30pm.  Or sign up the morning of the race starting at 7:00am.  To sign up on-line:  http://www.lin-mark.com/
Volunteers are still needed for “road police” at each street intersection between 17th and 28th Streets along Avalon Avenue; and 17th through 39th along First Avenue.   1 hour of service = a free race t-shirt!

Call or e-mail me if you can help, and include a shirt size, too.  You are welcome to request a location- and we will get back to you with a specific street assignment.  Call 609-967-7950  or ann@anndelaney.com

Thanks!  Your participation is appreciated by the local charities that benefit from this event (Lion’s Club of Avalon , Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Brendan Borek High Tides Memorial Fund).

  • Stone Harbor Sidewalk Sale- Today!

stoneharbordowntown.jpg  Browse the sales along 96th Street and the surrounding business district all day today (until at least 7pm).

  • Check Out Day

villamaria.jpg  While walking by the Villa Maria by the Sea retreat house yesterday, I watched the nuns loading up their cars – leaving to go back to school!  A few walked down to the beach for a final look at the ocean.  The retreat house stays active through the fall, including hosting their major fundraiser: The Nun’s Beach Surfing Contest/Dinner on September 6th.

  • Change of Weather

augustocean.jpg  Although I vowed not to rush the end of the summer, it definitely feels like September today- a cool north breeze and a brilliant blue sky.  The wind direction will help carry the noise from the Atlantic City Air Show- watch for the military planes traveling to and from the show.

  • Heads Up- Wednesday

The Atlantic City Air Show is Wednesday, August 20th- an all day event -Web site: http://www.atlanticcitychamber.com/

If you are on the beach Wednesday, you will hear the roar in the distance, and see many of the planes as they arrive and depart the show.  One year I saw a stealth bomber pass over head. Very cool!

  • Glad the Olympics are on late

moonrise2.jpg  Saturday Night:  There was still plenty of time for a long walk on the beach to see the full moon rise over the ocean.  The sunset was equally spectacular- with a bright red sky.

Then an exciting night watching the Olympics.

  • August Weather

Another reason to appreciate summer at the Jersey Shore:  the mountain towns of Colorado (where my son lives) had 6″ of snow yesterday.  And we complain that the ocean is a bit chilly??

Enjoy this beautiful weekend… the weather here is perfect!

  • Wait…it’s only August 15th

Labor Day is early this year, but HEY we still have 2 full weeks of summer!  Ignore those “End of Season Sale” signs in stores (okay- take advantage of the sales, but don’t let it effect your mood).   Don’t rush the inevidible- enjoy the remaining weeks…

  • The Point of Kayaking

I was never an athlete (year book editor type), so when I bought my first kayak a few years ago, my family was a bit puzzled.  In a typical show of support, one of my sisters asked “Why, in your mid- 40’s did you suddenly decide to become athletic??”

Well, it wasn’t a passing phase, and I go out on the bay (and sometimes the ocean) on a regular basis.  Proof that you can find an activity that suits your personality and skill level.  It’s always an adventure…

thepoint.jpg  This is the other side of Stone Harbor Point- before you reach the inlet (and ocean).

grasseysoundbridge.jpg  The Grassy Sound Bridge- interesting to go under the bridges.  To see the damage from the salt air is incredible…makes me wonder what I will look like as I get older  😉
