Our “leaf peeping” opportunities may be more limited by the beach, yet we will start to see colorful changes in the trees along the sand dunes. The access paths through the high dunes in Avalon are especially pretty this time of year.
Goldenrod is common along most of the beach entrances- blooming bright yellow for several weeks.
And finally, the vibrant green of the back bay marsh grass gradually fades as we approach the colder months.
The island is experiencing significant tidal flooding from the Nor’easter.
Because it’s a weekend in September, there are more people around than for a typical winter storm. And that means more vehicles driving through the salt water – causing damage to not only their own cars/ trucks, but also to the nearby homes and businesses.
I arrived to my office just before high tide, and watched the water quickly rise over the streets and sidewalks. Even our back parking lot has standing water.
It WILL drain, but that takes time.
P.S. My theory from several hours of watching the “traffic” from my office window: some drivers must believe that if they ride fast through the water, the displacement will keep their vehicle dry!

Labor Day weekend 2026
The island is busy, with comfortable September weather to finish out the season.
As always, summer means balancing my busy work schedule with family time.
I am grateful to live in an environment that provides an amazing opportunity for both!

View the Stone Harbor fireworks on Friday night, and the Avalon fireworks on Saturday night.
Although our local municipalities planned to enforce the new regulations regarding e-bikes (aka pedal assist bikes), those of us who own e-bikes are unable to complete the tasks.
We secured the required liability insurance (not easy to find!). However, the NJ Division of Motor Vehicles could not issue registration cards. The clerk at the DMV (when we arrived for our scheduled appointment) said they are still “waiting for instructions from Trenton”. Frustrating!
I understand the need to enforce safety standards- especially with the number of young people riding the bikes. Setting age and helmet requirements, as well as making sure the riders follow the rules of the road are the more logical steps.
Reminder to purchase your seasonal beach tags by May 31st for the reduced rate.
Tags are $37 now; $42 as of June 1st . Avalon and Stone Harbor tags are reciprocal.
Every weekend, we see more seasonal shops and restaurants re-opening.
The street trees along the business district are in full bloom. Our windy days ahead will create “spring flurries” of the white flowers.

The annual Easter Sunday Sunrise service will be held at the 30th Street pavilion overlooking the beach in Avalon NJ.
The ecumenical service, hosted by the local churches in Avalon and Stone Harbor, begins at 6am.
I drove past a golf cart on Dune Drive this morning (although the passengers were noticeably bundled up against the cold temps!)
And Hoy’s 5 & 10 in Avalon is back open for the season.
Summer is just around the corner 🙂
