 The wind changed direction, the clouds gave way to the sun, and the temperature actually reached 40 degrees this afternoon. A walk on the beach was much more productive than watching the Eagles game!
 The shore had a light coating of snow yesterday morning- that’s snow on the sand by the beach path on 95th Street.Â
The snow didn’t last…but the cold temperatures are sure hanging on! I guess it’s really time to bring out the wool sweaters 🙁
One more tip for preparing your house for winter- even if your outside faucet is frost-proof, don’t forget to remove the hose. The water in the hose will freeze and back up into the faucet and cause it to break (I speak from experience here).
The cold weather arrived a bit early at the shore. Is your house ready?
Drain the outside shower and other outside water connections (common on the decks of the newer homes); if the water is on inside the house, make sure the heat is set at 55 degrees or higher; open the cabinets under the kitchen and bathroon sinks to allow warm air to flow around the pipes; and close the vents in the crawl space.

Good news for our local beach communities for future funding of beach replenishment projects:
  Ever wonder about the red light bulbs in the front window of summer homes?  It’s a popular “high tech” system used by owners who leave their heat and water on in the winter months. The light bulb is plugged into a wall thermostat.  If the temperature in the house drops below the setting (typically 10 degrees below the real thermostat for the heat), the light goes on. The police or real estate agent notice the light (the red light stands out) and call the owner and/or service company to check the heat.
ACE Hardware in Stone Harbor sells the kit- and will know what you are talking about if you ask for the “red light thing”!Â
The breeze we appreciate all summer turns on us in the winter (literally). From now through spring, it’s just plain old wind.
20 to 30 mph is common at the shore- and the wind direction dictates our activities. South- take the wreath off the front door before it’s in the neighbor’s yard. West- walk on the beach instead of the street- the dunes will block the wind. North- bundle up, there is NO escaping this cold air. East- the dampness will defy the temperature, really bundle up!

I haven’t seen this movie yet- but it’s expected to explain our identity crisis, the true dividing line between north and south Jersey, and how Philadelphia and New York City influence the culture. The check list on the t-shirt is right on target!
