This Will Hurt

storm.jpg Often it’s the “no name” storms that cause the most concern.  The strong north east wind blows the soft sand sideways (ouch- that stings), and causes some beach erosion (that stings even more). We expect a few days worth of high winds, rough seas, and at least one day of heavy rain  🙁

Fall Activities

pavillion-2.jpg Another cool windy day at the shore.  The trick is to stay in the sun…and out of the wind!  I try to plan my walks accordingly- a challenge!

This is an ideal time to visit a few of the local restaurants- most will be open through the holidays.  Last call for Henny’s- haven’t heard a final closing date, but it will be in 2008.  Have you tried Jay’s on Third?  Fewer children screaming in Uncle Bill’s makes for a relaxing breakfast! Ditto for dinner at Marabella’s.  A burger at the Princeton sounds good on a chilly night.  So many choices…

Sunday Sights

sunday.jpg  Vehicles must now be permitted at the point- it was very active there this afternoon with families fishing and just hanging out at the beach.  It’s worth the long walk around the end of the island to see a true natural beach.

There was an odd bird sitting by the water’s edge- much larger than a New Jersey seagull, with icy blue eyes.  It looked like a prehistoric type featured on a brochure for the Galapagos Islands!  I guess he took the wrong exit…

Fall Feeling

fall2008.jpgVery chilly this morning- but the sun is starting to warm the air.  The 96th Street shopping district looks great with traditional fall decorations.  A beautiful weekend…enjoy!

Off Season at the Shore

lifeguardstands.jpg  The stands are in perfect order next to the 95th Street Life Guard Station.  The weather has turned chilly (long sleeve t-shirt needed for my morning walks), but we are bound to have a few more beach days still this fall.

Should be a perfect weekend for the annual Wings & Water Festival at the Wetland’s Institute.  Events all day Saturday and Sunday.

Bay Front for Sale

Exceptional value- older bay front cottage located on a beautiful wide basin in Stone Harbor, NJ.  Ideal site to build a new home.  The lot will accommodate a 1,650 square foot 2 story home- not a “McMansion”, yet comparable to a townhouse (with the added benefit of more deck/dock space and privacy).  The existing cottage is functional, but the sellers are realistic about the highest and best use for this prime location.  Price at land value: $1,295,000.

Update- Property now under contract  🙂

Sunday Sights

jetty.jpg  Hard to see in the picture- but this man on the jetty reminded me of Charlton Heston.  He was holding on to a metal pole and waving his arms.

High humidity today- felt even on a moderate walk along the beach.  The best place to be is under an umbrella, in a beach chair, and near the water’s edge.  There is a steady south east breeze- which will feel comfortable in a non-exercise mode!  The ocean is a just right (to me) 74 degrees.

Enjoy the bonus summer day.

Interest Rates- good news

Rates sheets circulating from our local mortgage reps show rates as low as 5.625% for 30 year fixed!  Even the “jumbo” loans are favorable at 6.5% for fixed rate programs.

Low mortgage rates, realistic sellers, and an ample inventory of homes available for sale…the perfect storm!

The Marble House in Avalon

For the past 10 years, the “Marble House” has been the must see house on the island.  And now it’s for sale (see attached link below).

I was able to preview the house yesterday during an agent’s open house- and left with a better impression than I expected.

There is a museum quality about the interior- perfectly appointed and nothing out of place.  It has to be the most immaculate house I have ever seen- my OCD gene appreciates a well maintained home without clutter!  There are no signs of wear and tear on the wood and marble floors or the fixtures.

The views from the 2nd floor are of the dunes and distant horizon of the ocean. If you bravely climb the spiral staircase to the 3rd floor deck (level with the roof) you will be rewarded with amazing views all around.  The odd part is the proximity of your north side neighbor.  One agent suggested a water slide from the top deck down to their pool (it feels like you are hanging over their pool rather than the pool on this site).

The exterior is intimidating (maybe it’s the security cameras??), but the interior space is more neutral and calming than I anticipated.  The colors are soft, and huge windows provide incredible light.  The house is designed for entertaining- you can picture elegant parties around the private pool and massive 2nd floor great room.

Fun to see a unique Avalon home…now to find a buyer!

Beach Day

birds.jpg  The Philadelphia news stations predicted dreary weather for today…but the sun is out and the weather is great.  Tomorrow will be HOT, so come down to the beach!

Watch for the rhythmic flight of the sandpipers. The turn of their wings creates a white, then gray “cloud” swirling through the air.
