Local Lore, continued

Conversation during a social gathering with a group of summer neighbors- after introductions and mentioning which house is ours:

“So where do you really live?”       “Here.  This is our year round home.”

“Even in the winter?”           “Yes, ALL year.”

“Wow (with a confused look)…well, where are you from?”       “Here.”

“No, where are you from originally?”       “Well, I grew up in Avalon, and my husband was raised in Wildwood.”

“Oh.”  More confused looks.  Another neighbor intervened and confirmed that there ARE people FROM here….she has even met a few 😉

I love this topic. I recently purchased a place in Stone Harbor and had the opportunity to spend many weekends on the island since March. I was of the opinion that off season was brutal, until I experienced it myself. The beaches are quiet, the island is dark (I’ve never slept better), the shop owners have time to talk, traffic doesn’t exist, meters are disabled … the list goes on. There is a solitude and comfort I feel off season and I’m glad this isn’t an opinion shared by everyone!
