Volunteers Needed

http://timkerrcharities.org/  Are you available this Saturday, July 3rd between 7- 9am?  “Street Police” volunteers are needed at street ends (between 8th and 38th Streets) to prevent traffic from entering and/or crossing Avalon Avenue and First Avenue during the Islandman Triathlon.

There will be over 500 participants in this sold out event: a 1/4 mile ocean swim; the 12 mile closed course bike race (when you see the speeds, you will understand the need for closed roadways!); and the 5K boardwalk/beach run.

All volunteers receive a 2010 Islandman Triathlon t-shirt as a thank you 🙂

Please let me know if you can help…and your preferred location.  Thanks!

P.S.  Do you know a student who needs service hours?  Volunteers can earn 5 hours- Midge Kerr will provide documentation for the students after the race.  Contact Midge@TimKerrCharities.org for more information.

Sand Shark

sandsharkWatched this young lady reel in a 45″ sand shark last evening.  She was fishing with her grandfather, mother, and sisters- and very excited about her catch.

As the daughter of a surf fisherman, it brought back memories of time spent at the water’s edge by my father’s side.  His daughters didn’t  have the same enthusiam – but he was a good sport teaching us to bait a hook, cast, and clean the fish (yuck).

These girls took turns confidently holding the fish after the grandfather removed the hook.  And, then they set the sand shark free.

What NOT to Do

rainSeriously…thunderstorms at the shore have the same risks as those back in the “real world”.  Just to clarify, here’s a list of what NOT to do during a storm:

Ride your bike; jog along Dune Drive; walk on the beach; expect your open deck umbrella to withstand the high winds; walk your dog.

Trash day adds to the fun- several recycling containers blew over- creating an obstacle course of bottles and cans 😉

Thankfully, the sun has returned- a beautiful evening.

Spotted Around Town

1) Yet another summer with what must be a factory shortage of beach cover ups. Forcing girls (young and old by the way) to walk around town and ride bikes in just their bathing suits. Very distracting to the men (again, young and old!)

2) Saw the Princeton shuttle bus parked in front of Maris Stella Church on 50th Street in Avalon.  Okay, the driver was on his cell phone- but I thought it might be a smart business move after 5 o’clock mass!

3)  Colorful pillows were added to a drab, Borough owned bench on Second Avenue in Stone Harbor.  Guessing the owner of the charming cottage on the corner is responsible.

4)  The building renovations are almost complete on 82nd and Third Avenue for the new Henny’s Seafood Take-out.  Watching for the grand opening sign…

Early Saturday Morning

bridgeThe view from my kayak early this morning.

A thick mist hung over the calm bay.  I was only able to stop briefly to take this picture- had to “out paddle” the gnats!

Have a good weekend 🙂

Keeping Cool

coolwalkWith early morning temperatures close to 80 degrees, I decided to ditch the sneakers and modify my beach walk to a water’s edge walk.

Cool ocean air battled the land breeze- creating a swirling mix of temperatures.

Stay cool- ideally with an umbrella, a beach chair, and the ocean nearby!

Progress Report- beach fill

beachfillAvalon, NJ-  The beach fill project is progressing south.  Tractors are building dunes and spreading the newly pumped sand to create a wide beach.

Best view today was from the 21st Street beach pavillion:  http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnDelaneyBeach:\  An interesting process to watch.

Summer Solstice

moonFrom my Twitter site  http://twitter.com/AnnDelaneyBeach :

For those of us who go to bed early, the lingering dusk from Summer Solstice jolts a childhood memory of bedtime before darkness as punishment.

Happy Summer!
