    StoneHarborStoriesTwo recent opportunities to walk down memory lane.

    On Tuesday, I attended the premiere of “Stone Harbor Stories”, a movie celebrating the Borough’s Centennial (DVD is available for purchase at the Stone Harbor Museum- 93rd Street).

    I have only been around for half of that time 😉 yet so many of the old photos were familiar.

    On Wednesday, a summer class sponsored by the Avalon Library was held in a classroom of the adjacent elementary school (my 6th grade classroom if I remember correctly!) In the hallway, there is a collage of prior students. How on earth did those “kids” get to be so old?

    These situations jog forgotten memories…and make me smile!

  • Fireworks from the Beach

    fireworksI actually prefer when Avalon and Stone Harbor fireworks are scheduled on different nights.

    Last night, we were able to sit on the beach at 95th Street, and see the Stone Harbor display…along with Sea Isle City ‘s and Ocean City’s in the back ground.

    As we left the beach, we could see Wildwood’s fireworks in the distance.

    Tonight, we will have the bonus of Avalon!

     

     

  • Brendan’s Fund

    brendanborekI am proud to support The Brendan Borek High Tides Memorial Fund: a grass roots organization helping Cape May County pediatric cancer patients and their families since 1992.

    Later today: the 4th Annual Low Tide Beach Ride on 9th Street- 6:30pm

    On July 29th, the Annual Artist and Friends Art Show at the Avalon Yacht Club- 6pm- 9pm.

  • Island Dwellers

    Enjoyed a unique opportunity to actually MEET a few fellow Twitter friends from Cape May last night.  We joked that we would get together…and then “tweet” back and forth.

    Fortunately, our phones sat idle while we engaged in real live conversations!

    A common theme- winter at the shore.  We compared notes…and interestingly…the Cape May residents were curious how WE managed  living here.  This struck me as funny.  Yes, Avalon and Stone Harbor are quiet in the off season.  And we don’t have the numerous dining options.  Oh, and we can’t walk to the Acme or CVS.  Okay…maybe they have a point 😉

    One Cape May resident (an artist) said it best: “People either get Cape May…or they don’t”.  That’s so true about all of the local beach communities- each offering a different quality of life.

    Thankfully, our little (quiet) island suits us just fine 🙂

  • Avalon and Stone Harbor Sales

    Market Update: summary of past 30 days.

    salesignA total of 33 properties SOLD in Avalon and Stone Harbor.

    22 single family homes; ranging in price from $762,000 for a nice upside down style home just over the 21st Street bridge in Avalon; to $2,750,000 for a new 5 bedroom Stone Harbor home on a large lot with a private pool.  The median selling price for all single family homes: $1,762,500.

    7 condo/townhouse units; ranging in price from $250,000 for a 2 bedroom unit above an ice cream shop on Dune Drive in Avalon; to $1,060,000 for a renovated bay front townhouse style at Cornell Harbor in Avalon. The median selling price for all condo/townhouse units was $520,000.

    There were 3 vacant lots sold: Corner of 54th and Dune Drive for $950,000; 100 block of 110th Street for $1,400,000; and beach block of 66th Street for $2,450,000.

    One multi-family sale: an older side by side building in the 100 block of 83rd Street for $1,037,500 (both units).

    The overall median selling price (all categories) $1,363,000.

    In addition, there are 44 properties under contract, with settlements scheduled for the near future.  The median asking price for the pending sales is $1,412,500 (final selling price posted after closing).

  • Busy Week!

    Music, bike races, sand sculptures, a boat parade, and fireworks…oh my!

    Live entertainment Tuesday evening below the Stone Harbor Water Tower – 7pm.   Same night: Big Beach Movie (Monster’s University)- 8:45pm at 30th Street beach in Avalon.

    More live music on Thursday evening at Veterans Plaza, 21st Street circle- 7pm.

    Friday the 4th- a full day of events. In Avalon: 10th Street field for races at 9:30am; boat parade at 1pm (starts at Avalon Point Marina); music at the Community Hall (30th Street) starting a 6pm.  AND a huge fireworks display at 9pm.    In Stone Harbor:  9am sand sculpture contest at 80th Street and the beach; foot and bike races at the 80th Street field; live music starts at 6pm; AND another option for amazing fireworks at 9:30pm.

  • Peaceful Places

    Even during the busy summer season, it’s possible to find a quiet place on the island.

    The inlet section of Avalon (along the jetty, or closer to the bay). Stone Harbor Point.  Kayaking in the back bay (near the marsh where it’s too shallow for boats).  An early morning beach walk (although this morning, we had to share the shoreline with a few others!)  And, the sunrise surfers/paddle boarders don’t seem to mind the lack of waves…just hanging with the dolphins!

  • Islandman Triathlon Saturday 6/28

    IslandmanIt’s that time of year again- The Islandman Triathlon (a Tim Kerr Charities event).

    Race Director Midge Kerr, needs volunteers for the bike course portion of the race.  This is a closed course event for the safety of the participants (when you see how fast the riders pass, you will understand!)

    Saturday, June 28th between 7:15am and 9:45am. Coverage requested for each block on Avalon and First Avenues along the course. Volunteers will receive FREE logo shirts.

  • Father’s Day at the Beach

    I wrote this post in 2011; worthy of an annual repeat!

    DadThinking of my father today.  He worked 6 days a week, so Sundays were a sacred day…at the beach.

    My dad was blessed with hardy Irish skin that turned dark brown in the summer months.  Suntan lotion (we didn’t call it sunscreen back then) and the giant yellow umbrella with the lethal metal pole were for the rest of us who just freckled and burned.

    My mother laughs when decribing all of the equipment hauled to the beach, along with 4 little girls: a large playpen (even heavier than the massive umbrella), beach chairs, buckets, coolers, etc.  And of course, my father’s fishing gear.  At a certain age, my sisters and I were permitted to walk back to the house to retrieve more food and beer for the grown ups (wrapping the beer in foil to trick the lifeguards??)

    The Sunday tradition continued with the next generation.  My sons enjoyed beach days with “Pop Pop” and followed the rules at the end of the day: 1) “call” your turn for the outside shower, and 2) hang bathing suits/towels on the line.  All beach items were thoroughly rinsed, set in the sun to dry, and of course, neatly stored by night fall. Even though we grew up by the beach, sand was NEVER permitted in the house!

    yardLong beach days are an ongoing family tradition.  My father’s rules are now enforced at my house (I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown the day this picture was taken…I am my father’s daughter!)

    The love of the beach…and family time together.
