  • Just Because…

Beautiful day.  South end Stone Harbor- catamaran beach.

  • Sunday Sights

Heavy rain, clearing skies, and then the sun.  Oh, and a Portuguese Man O’ War (actually 2) found at the south end of Stone Harbor!

From a distance, I thought the first one was a colorful ziplock bag (and walked over to pick it up and throw it away).  Thankfully, I read the recent posts from Long Beach Island and instead just took pictures!

MONDAY UPDATE: The Wetlands Institute confirmed via Twitter – “Portuguese man of war. They can come ashore in NJ when northerly and north easterly winds pushing the Gulf Stream on shore”.

  • Shore Weather

The Avalon Beach Patrol made the decision to cancel the swim portion of today’s triathlon due to rough surf.

Otherwise, reasonable weather for the participants in this morning’s event.

This is a closed course event for the safety of the participants (when you see how fast the bike riders pass, you will understand!)

  • Pumping Sand

The sand is flowing on to the north end Avalon beaches.  It’s a fun process to watch (this is the view from 11th Street looking north toward the 8th Street jetty).

The project will run 24/7, and continue moving south to 25th Street.  Beaches on either side of the work area will be closed for safety reasons.

  • Saturday Sights

The sky cleared during my early morning walk.  Enjoy the weekend!

  • Family Week

They come from near (Cape May, Margate, Smithville, Mays Landing, and New Egypt, NJ) and far (North Carolina) to spend a week at the beach.

Many of the cousins are now old enough to go to the Princeton- and yet are still happy to play paddle ball or boogie board with the younger set.

The young at heart grown ups will lead the charge with kayaking and the water park.  And of course, plenty of hours just hanging out on the sand.

Surfboards, beach toys, and umbrellas define our beach territory…as well as a giant hole/moat to block the incoming tide.

  • Kayaking

First time out kayaking for 2015.  Finally the wind, tide, and my early morning schedule cooperated!

A bit foggy…and had to keep moving to out run the gnats 😉  Good to be back on the bay.

  • Equipment- Avalon Beach Fill

Monday- 11am.  An active staging area by the 8th Street jetty in preparation of the north end beach fill.  Currently, beach and jetty access is open on 8th Street, and a lifeguard is stationed on 9th Street.

The only pipe in place is the one over the jetty.  Pipes will be installed and run parallel along the beach to carry sand once the dredge arrives from Strathmere.

As the project proceeds south from 9th Street, the beaches on either side will be closed for safety reasons.  Once the new sand is graded, beaches will re-open.  Access paths over the pipe will be built (with sand).
