Note the hawk on top of the cross at Villa Maria by the Sea retreat house- perfect lead in picture for my post!

  • Saturday Sights

Another day of big waves for the surfers.

Okay- it’s time for calmer water for the wimpy ocean kayaker who wants to hang out with the dolphins while it’s still warm 😉

There is a Craft Fair on 30th Street in Avalon today. The sun is out- a perfect day to wander around the downtown shops.

And tomorrow, a 5K Hero Run in Stone Harbor:  http://www.walkjogrun.net/events/running/9-11-Heroes-Run-Stone-Harbor/1970526

  • Post Labor Day Post

Labor Day weekend ended with good crowds, big ocean waves, and overcast skies- thankfully, the rain held off until last night.

Planning ahead- the Wings and Water Festival sponsored by the Wetlands Institute is just 2 weeks away- September 17th/18th: http://wetlandsinstitute.org/

And, that same weekend, The 16th Annual Nun’s Beach Surfing Contest– all day Saturday, September 17th on 111th Street (in front of Villa Maria by the Sea).  Watch the surfers and purchase a sweatshirt with the popular “Nun’s Beach” logo!

  • Summer Images

Okay, I will avoid wearing white…but I will not declare summer over just yet!

A beautiful 7 mile island with so much to see and do.

See you on the beach…or bay 🙂

  • Back to “Normal”

Owners and visitors returning to the island for Labor Day Weekend.

Downtown Stone Harbor is busy with the (postponed) annual sidewalk sale.  Avalon Coffee and Kohler’s Bakery have lines out the door!

My niece and nephews (and their parents) enjoyed a great week in Avalon- a slightly delayed vacation after Irene.

Tim Kerr 7 Mile/ 5K Run – tomorrow morning at 8:30am.  Registration later this afternoon and early tomorrow morning before the race.  Avalon Community Hall. 30th and the beach.

  • Avalon, Stone Harbor after Irene

Sunrise watching- Friday, and again this morning.

The views may have been similar, but my emotional response was completely different.

On Friday, we walked down prior to evacuating the island, and I was overwhelmed with sadness and fear.

Today, I was welcomed back by the wide (and intact) beach, dolphins just beyond the wave break, and a warm sun.  Ahhh…that’s better 🙂

Back to work and inspecting a few homes before tenants move back in.  Minimal damage and only minor flooding issues.  Most businesses are back open (although I did hear that Kohler’s Bakery won’t open until Friday- darn) and preparing for the Labor Day weekend.

  • Shore Owners

We are thrilled to be back on the island!

Our shore communities were fortunate, yet it’s important to inspect your property for damage as soon as possible.

We are unable to allow tenants entry or re-entry to a property until the owner or their designated contractor verifies that all utilities are functioning, and that there are no safety issues.

  • Saturday Night with Irene

She has yet to arrive, but already creating widespread grief.

We are watching 6ABC news on the Internet and I’m obsessed with Twitter.

This is so much more than a shore event- especially with the current tornado warnings in effect. Scary.

We all REALLY deserve a peaceful beach day…soon.

  • Positive Thoughts

b Picture taken Friday morning (was that only yesterday??)

I was up early preparing and worrying, and knew a walk on the beach to watch the sunrise would help.

Left the island by 10am. Hope to return soon…

Will post Avalon and Stone Harbor updates as I know more.

Yesterday was a crazy day. We were up early to prepare for the mandatory evacuation, took a walk on the beach (posted pictures on Twitter), stopped by my office for a final check, and then headed out.

Our families are long time “beach people”, and many live along the coast. My kind sister and brother in law have 4 additional people to feed for the long weekend!

will continue to track the news and post updates on Twitter
