    The man driving the tri-pod attached a hook from the crane, and then climbed down from his post onto the floating platform.  The crane lifted the tri-pod up and over to the center of the platform.  Once the equipment was secured, the tug pulled it all back out to sea!

    It was soooooo cold for a beach walk, but I would miss all of this “excitement” on my treadmill  🙂

    What’s missing?  The new sand covers the numerous outfall pipes previously exposed along the beach.  The Borough will eventually remove most of the pipes (a separate project)- but in the meantime, the beach looks so open and uncluttered.

     

     

     

     

    EdgeSandWith the tide going out, we could walk along the water’s edge and get a perspective of the amount of new sand on the beach.  Mother Nature and the Borough of Stone Harbor will make sure the slope to the ocean is safe well before the summer season.

    So pretty as I drove home from work yesterday- an almost full moon coming up over the ocean, and a bright orange sunset over the bay. 

    A walk after dinner gave us a final opportunity to watch the beach replenishment process (they work 24 hours a day).  The crew and equipment were on 99th Street last night- only one block to go.

  • Building a Beach

    The sand is pumped to create a wall along the ocean’s edge, and then another pile is added closer to the dunes.  The bulldozers flatten the sand and make a wide beach.  Impressive to watch.

    BeachSatAfter just 24 hours, the hard working crew from the dredging company has made great progress on the 110th/ 111th Street beach.  The sand is coming out of the pipe even more forceful than last night (the center of the picture).   Anxious for the sand to dry to see the finished product.

     Wet sand spits out of the pipe (through a mesh cage filter), and is spread in place by 2 bulldozers.

    dredgeNovThe dredge is positioned in the inlet between Stone Harbor and North Wildwood.  Sand travels through pipes to the staging area (111th Street).  The pipe will be extended as the project moves north through the next week to 10 days.

  • Thanksgiving Weekend

    Hard to believe- just 1 week away. 

     On Friday, 11/27, Avalon will kick off the holiday season with the Christmas tree lighting and a visit from Santa at the 21st Street circle (Veteran’s Plaza)- starting at 4pm.

    Events planned in Stone Harbor for Friday and Saturday- holiday music, a dog parade (seriously), and hospitality night on Friday; more live music and the Christmas parade on Saturday (parade starts at 7pm). 

    It’s a fun weekend at the shore!

  • Stone Harbor picture

    Sanderling

    Picture taken this morning just before high tide from the 96th Street beach looking toward the Sanderling Condominium building.  Prior to the recent storms, I could see the 2nd and 3rd floor units .  Now, only the top of the building is visible from the water’s edge.

    The sand level is lower, but thankfully, there is still some beach and the dunes are in place.

    The dredging/beach fill process started today- will work their way north from 111th Street to 98th Street during the next 2 weeks.

  • Floods To Snow

    snowDenver Left the soggy seashore Saturday night in time for a snow storm in Denver.

    Even with the snow, the lack of humidity is such a contrast to our area.
