As far as I know, skunks are not “native” to the island (IÂ grew up by the high dunes and not far from the 74th Street sanctuary- never saw one when I was young).Â
The situation reminds me of the ferral cat debate- animal lovers versus those who classify them as rodents.

I don’t remember skunks in Avalon growing up either. We certainly spent enough time in the dunes and at the various parks and wildlife areas around the island and I don’t ever remember encountering a skunk on any of our island adventures.
We never had a skunk break into one of our forts!
