  • Saturday- Beach Update

    BeachpathNov  I was anxious to see the condition of the beach this morning.  The beach path at 120th Street in Stone Harbor is completely filled in with sand.

  • Friday Weather

    86thThird Past high tide, but it will take some time for the water to recede in the low lying areas of the island.  Borough workers in both towns are busy cleaning up the debris left behind.

     

     

     

     

    weatherThe Weather Channel was broadcasting from 7th Street and First Avenue in Avalon .  Even at low tide, the ocean spray over the rock wall gave us a direct hit!

  • Storm Chasers for Pizza

    Nemos What?  No delivery tonight?  The guys at Nemo’s answered the phone and took our order.  That was the easy part.

    They were sand bagged in for the storm…but still making pizza for the locals!

    Freight train like wind…steady rain…above average high tides…just another beautiful day at the shore   😉

    I’m looking at the American flags on top of Hoy’s 5 & 10 (that’s my version of the Weather Channel from my office)- sustained winds from the north east.

    The bridge between Avalon and Sea Isle is closed (waves crash over the rocks during this type of storm)- and there is moderate flooding near the bay in the low lying areas.

    P.S.  The wind by the ocean (21st Street pavilion) was incredible- taking this picture was a challenge!

    P.S. The Townsend Inlet bridge (between Avalon and Sea Isle City) will be closed until next week.  A barge on site for repairs broke loose during the storm and hit the bridge- possibly causing some structural damage. 

  • Dune Buggy

    dunebuggy No, it’s not Monster Truck week in Stone Harbor.

    This unique dune buggy will be used by the dredging company during the beach fill project.  Other, more ordinary equipment arrived early this morning to the parking area at 111th Street.

  • Salt Water Cure

    bay I didn’t feel well this morning.  With the media coverage of the flu, we are all conscious of staying home if we are sick.

    Checked the weather…and tide chart…and decided that, yes, it would be best if I didn’t go to the office today.

    When you are raised at the shore, you learn early on that salt water can cure just about any ailment.  Parents tell their children to go in the ocean, and they will feel better.

    So that’s what I did…sort of.   I took a long walk on the beach, and then kayaked in the bay.  Too cold for a swim, but perfect to enjoy the water surrounding me.

    Not feeling 100%…but I think the salt air helped a bit!

  • Frosty & Warm

    flysouth Frost on the cars and grass this morning.  But typical of this time of year, it was much warmer on the beach.

    Birds are flying south.   Some of our retired year round residents will be following soon, too.

     

    NovBeach The warm sun reflecting off of the ocean is the reward for bundling up for a walk on the beach.  A beautiful November weekend at the shore!

  • Avalon/ Sea Isle City

    LifeguardAvalon The mayors of Avalon and Sea Isle City are working together on a beach fill project. 

    According to an article in the Cape May County Herald, the communities are not waiting for state/federal funding because the need is immediate.

    In Sea Isle City, the focus is on the 73rd to 93rd Street beaches; and in Avalon, 9th to 26th Streets will be replenished.

  • Agitation

    Foamy waves from a rough ocean.  Mother Nature’s spin cycle to clean the water.

    Along with the foam, natural and man made debris is pushed to the shore for proper disposal.  It’s a gentle reminder for the beach walkers to bring along a trash bag to help with the process!

    P.S.  The Stone Harbor beach fill project (98th to 111th Streets)- updated schedule- survey work this week, and pumping of sand to start on Sunday, November 8th (weather permitting).
