New Year’s Eve in Avalon NJ
Fireworks on Friday, December 31st at 5pm.
Families are encouraged to access the beach at 30th and 32nd Street for best viewing (and safety).
Events and entertainment prior to the fireworks- starting at 3:30pm at Surfside Park (30th Street and the boardwalk).
Rain date, Â Saturday evening, January 1st.

Thanksgiving Weekend- island style
After you finish up your turkey dinner…it’s time for Christmas 😉

The highlight of the weekend is the parade on Saturday night (starting at 6:30pm on 108th and Third Avenue, heading north to 96th Street).

Last week, we traveled to the mountains of North Carolina, and then over to the beach in South Carolina to hang out with our grandsons and their parents â¤ï¸

What’s on your list?
The “September” weather these past 2 days is Mother Nature’s reminder to enjoy the remaining weeks of summer!
My list of things to do typically revolves around restaurants to try before they close for the season.
Because the weather is so nice through the early fall, there’s still plenty of time for activities such as kayaking and bike rides.
When the swallows start lining up on the electrical wires…I know the summer clock is ticking 😉

TK Charities Event on Saturday
Request from Midge Kerr (Race Coordinator):
Sorry for the short notice, we have had some late openings for volunteers on our bike course for this Saturday’s upcoming charity event, Islandman and Islandkids Triathlons.
We need to keep the cyclist safe while they are  riding their bikes and limit vehicle and pedestrian crossing in front of them until there is a gap and it is safe to allow them to cross.
Time commitment is from 7:20- 9:45am and you are assigned a street somewhere along Avalon Avenue and First Avenue.
Volunteers get a tee shirt to wear during the event, and a large heavy duty event beach tote bag!Bike Course Marshals can check in and get their race gear Friday from 5-7pm, inside Community Hall, 3001 Avalon Avenue.
This way, race day Saturday, volunteers could go directly to their assigned streets and avoid all the athletes checking in at the hall.If that is not an option, volunteers can still come race day from 5:30-7am and check in at the volunteer table inside the hall.
Bike course coverage is critical to the safety and success of our event in our community. Marshals must be at least 18 years of age.Â

Life as a Tenant
I’m a full time rental agent, landlord… and, occasionally a tenant.
Last week, I rented 2 homes in the mountains of North Carolina near the venue for a family wedding.
Both homes were managed by the same agency (Carolina Mornings) and similarly priced. Â Yet with 2 different property owners, the experiences varied.
One home had at least half of the kitchen cabinets locked, and a sparse inventory of dish ware and overall supplies. Â The cabin was clean and comfortable, but this left a disappointing impression of the landlord.
The other cabin was perfect. Â It really felt like we were staying as guests in a well loved home. Â I appreciated the labels in the kitchen so that items could be returned to their proper spot (helpful when unloading the dishwasher). Â The interior and exterior furnishings were comfortable and clean. Bedding was high quality. Â In every room, there were thoughtful amenities and extras.
It was a great reminder to me (as both an agent and landlord) about the importance of the tenant experience.

2020 Project
In addition to the journal started last March, I have been documenting the last 9 months with pictures (mostly for my Twitter posts).
It was easy to upload the photos to Shutterfly from my phone, and then add brief descriptions to create a book.
The other photo albums saved on my Shutterfly account feature vacations and grandchildren…yet our 2020 experience is historically important, too.
Although the pandemic is far from over, the project provides hope for 2021.

Labor Day Weekend Updates
The annual TK Charities foot race is a Labor Day weekend tradition. Â Every year, we read the names of the generous sponsors on the signs that pop up along Dune Drive, and then cheer on close to 1000 runners as they take over the local streets!
Unfortunately, the event was cancelled for 2020.
Starting this Friday, indoor dining will be permitted with capacity limitations and specific ventilation requirements. Â If a restaurant is unable to work within the guidelines, they will continue with take-out and/or outdoor options.
After Monday, beach tags are no longer required, and there will be plenty of room to social distance!
