Another Island

We enjoyed a family vacation last week on Kiawah Island, South Carolina.  Not surprising…we really like beach locations 🙂

A few observations: similar to Hilton Head Island, the sand is especially hard- allowing bike riding on the beach.  We would pick our destination based on the wind direction (at our backs of course), and then return on the sheltered bike paths that wind around the homes and lagoons.

Speaking of homes – Kiawah Island definitely offers the “wow” factor with real estate.  This is one of the more modest beach front homes.  The best word to describe the structures? Substantial.  The building materials are high end and architectural details impressive.

It’s off season- maybe that’s why our beach area stood out? Chairs, beach cart, umbrella, coolers, boogie boards, buckets…and bikes!  Looked like a Jersey shore beach day 🙂

Critters and wildlife spotted: an alligator (from a safe distance), dolphins swimming VERY close to shore, an eagle, Monarch butterflies, Snowy egret, Blue heron, turtles, and several deer.

Back on “our” island after a fun week.

Preparing for Colder Weather

Considering I was kayaking in the ocean LAST Sunday…it seems early to talk about preparing your shore home for winter.

Yet, we know the colder temperatures will eventually arrive 🙁

The most over-looked items?  Outside showers and faucets. Even with a frost-proof connection, the hose must be disconnected to prevent damage.  Winterize the outside water by early November to avoid a problem.

Unless you completely drain the water inside the house (including toilets, dishwasher/washer lines, and the often forgotten ice maker line), the heat should be set between 55- 60 degrees.  Open cabinet doors under the sinks to allow the warm air to reach the pipes.

A reliable “home watch” service provides peace of mind in the off season, too.  Please let me know if you need a recommendation.

Seashore Rainbow

A beautiful fall weekend at the shore- cooler, dry air…and plenty of sunshine.

Yesterday of a weird mix of weather- some morning sun, then a downpour…then bright sun, and more rain.  On the plus side, and late afternoon rain produced a huge rainbow over the ocean just after 5pm.

I could see is from my house, and hurried down to the beach for a better view.  Unfortunately, by the time I reached the beach path, the colors were fading.

Construction on the Island

Ti’s the season…

The demolition equipment arrives, and within days, the “lot” is completely clear.  And just that quick, it’s difficult to remember what was there prior.

Or, a dumpster is placed in front of a house for a major renovation.

The Windrift in Avalon is participating, too.  The outdoor roof top bar has been removed and will be replaced (I’ve heard) with a more permanent structure.

All signs of an improving economy here at the shore!

P.S. In keeping with the demolition theme, the Avalon Police Department posted this notice of a drill later today- using a building scheduled for demolition next week.  The real estate office recently moved to a location in downtown Avalon.

Police will be conducting an exercise at the old Newbold Realty building at 68th and Ocean Dr. The exercise will occur between 3 and 9 PM. There will be no ‘live fire’, however there may be simulations resulting in loud bangs and booms. FOR SECURITY REASONS, NO SPECTATORS ALLOWED

Taking Advantage of the Weather

Early morning high tide and mild weather = bay kayaking before work.  The only other boats I saw were tied to a dock.  Had the bay all to myself  😉

SeaWorld at the Shore

Dolphins!  I took this picture during my morning walk – watched the dolphins jump out of the water and ride a few waves.

Even better?  I was surrounded by dolphins while kayaking in the ocean yesterday after work!  At first, I was able to paddle along side a few (the hot shots were racing me…I know).  And then, I positioned the kayak in the path of on-coming “traffic”.  Several dolphins circled under and around my boat (I asked them nicely not to tip me over!)- what an experience 🙂

An incredible afternoon.  Plus, I provided entertainment for those on the beach…with the dolphins, and my less than graceful dismount as I rode back to shore 😉

Shore Gardens

A positive outcome from our rainy September weather?  The gardens on the island will thrive well into the fall.

The mums are in full bloom and the goldenrod in the dunes is bright yellow.

Our “maritime forests” provide color as the leaves start to change.  Walk through a dune path, or around one of the protected sanctuaries (74th Street, 114th Street, or 123rd Street). This time of year, you can be up close to nature without the crowds…or the bugs!

Columbus Day Weekend

Temperatures already warming up to close to 70 degrees!

The annual Avalon Seafood Festival is underway at 30th Street and the beach (today and tomorrow).  The Avalon Green Fair is next door inside the Avalon Community Hall (today).

It definitely looks like a beach day 🙂

Of course, our office is open all weekend if you have any questions regarding sales or rentals in Avalon / Stone Harbor.   ann@anndelaney.com
