Morning Views

So peaceful on the beach this morning- calm ocean, gentle breeze, and comfortable temperatures.

The activity on the Stone Harbor beach continues.  As of today, beach access is closed between 102nd and 105th Street.  All beaches north and south of those streets are open with lifeguards at designated locations.

After the beach fill:  picture taken from 119th Street looking north.

The large metal pipe used to pump new sand on to the beaches will remain in place near the dune line until the end of June.

“Where do you really live?”

A question I have answered numerous times (twice this week in fact).

A look of confusion is common. “Isn’t it (pick an adjective) isolating, dreary, quiet, creepy, boring in the winter?”

Then to the follow up question: “Where are you from originally?”  When I answer “Avalon”, it’s certainly not what they are expecting.  How can somebody be from the shore??

This is when I feel obligated to mention that we love to travel (to clarify that I can drive over the bridge!) and feel so fortunate to live by the beach.

Avalon and Stone Harbor: my family history, my childhood, my place of business, and my home.  Proud to share it with you, too.

Jersey Shore Guide

I started reading my autographed copy of “The Jersey Shore” last night- Jen Miller’s new guide book covering Atlantic City to Cape May.

Of course, I skipped ahead to MY beach- Avalon and Stone Harbor!  Excited to see my tips for finding the perfect shore rental on page 128  🙂

The book is a great reference guide- even for us life long “locals”.  To purchase a copy for your beach house, visit Jen’s blog: http://www.downtheshorewithjen.com/

Beach Toys

The Stone Harbor beach fill project brings out the 6 year old boy in all of us:  “Wow…look at that!”

Beach paths are currently closed between 102nd through 111th Street (the parking area and vehicle access path needed at 111th Street).

Beaches on either side are open and guarded.  The entire project will be complete by the end of the month.

Beaches Open

For Stone Harbor owners and visitors asking about beach access during the month of June/ beach fill project:

The metal pipe will remain on the beach until the entire project is complete.   The pipe is extended as the crew moves north every few days.  As they re-open a completed beach, a sand walk-over is built over the pipe at each beach entrance.  It is the equivalent of walking in soft sand- a bit challenging but manageable.

I took a short video this morning at 109th Street: http://www.youtube.com/anndelaneybeach

Fascinating!

Holiday Weekend

BIG weekend in Avalon and Stone Harbor, NJ.

Great weather and Memorial Day events.

Also part of the entertainment:  the beach fill project in Stone Harbor.  As of this morning, the 107th and 108th Street beaches are next in line for new sand.  Once the areas are filled and groomed, beaches are re-opened to the public (currently, 115th Street and south).

By the way- the water to the right of the tractor is actually pumped in sand (mixed with water to push it through the pipe).  The water drains and the sand remains.

P.S. Interesting article posted by a fellow blogger about the connection with sports figures and the Jersey Shore (including my boss Tim Kerr): http://www.goingtotheshore.com/my-blog/2011/05/local-sports-figures-at-the-jersey-shore.html

Stay cool!

Stone Harbor Beach Fill

Picture taken last evening from the 122nd Street beach path- looking north.

The beaches between 115th Street and 123rd Streets are closed (owners and visitors are permitted to watch the action from the dune paths).

The young man working security said they are making great progress and should be finished the entire project well within the time allotted (by the end of June).

The Real Jersey Shore

Just one of the many beautiful views captured during a beach walk last evening.  This is why I will never understand the negative jokes about New Jersey!

We Are Ready

The sand is groomed, life guard stands and those distinctive boats are in position, and the crowds are arriving on the island.

In the winter, our defensive driving skills are limited to avoiding runaway trash cans on a windy day 😉   This weekend,  be alert for bikes, joggers, and distracted walkers as we all transition to summer.
