  • Dogs on the Beach

    Like most seashore towns, Avalon and Stone Harbor have restrictions for dogs on the beach.

    In Avalon, leashed dogs are permitted on the the beach only in the off season- between September 30th and March 1st.

    Stone Harbor allows leashed dogs on the beach between 7pm and sunset  from June 1st through September 30th; and this year, installed doggie clean up bag dispensers at some beach paths. 

    Now for my rant: my early morning walks on the beach technically should be “dog free”.   I am not a dog owner, but I understand the appeal of taking a dog for a run on the beach, or a swim in the ocean.   And dog owners may genuinely feel they can control their pet, and therefore, remove the leash.

    Unfortunately, when a dog is charging at me, I see aggression.  I don’t believe  “he is just saying hello”, or “she won’t hurt you”.   I have even tried Dog Whisperer techniques- avoid eye contact, walk farther away, make the chhhhttt noise…without success.  My fear may not seem rational to the dog owner, but it’s based on prior experiences with other “friendly” dogs.

    So I will appeal to my readers.  If you own a beach dog, please follow the local leash laws.  It will make for happier blog posts 😉

  • To the Beach!

    One of our tenants compared driving around town today to playing a video game…at the master’s level!

    People, bikes, and beach carts everywhere. 

    The Islandman/ Islandkids Triathlon took place this morning- over 600 participants in this popular, annual event.  The Power Play Realty agents worked along with the large team of volunteers (including Borough workers, summer residents, and visitors). 

    Fireworks tomorrow night in Avalon (30th Street); and Monday night in Stone Harbor (80th Street).  Enjoy the weekend!

  • Watching the Race, Road Closures

    If you will be in Avalon, NJ on Saturday morning, be sure to cheer for the participants of the Islandman Triathlon.

    The ocean swim starts behind the Avalon Community Hall at 7:30am; followed by the closed course bike race; and then the foot race.

    For safety reasons, no car traffic is permitted on or across Avalon Avenue or First Avenue during the bike race.  The adults complete 3 laps on the bike course: north on Avalon Avenue to 8th Street turn around- south on First Avenue to 38th Street and then along Dune Drive to Bayberry Drive, and back north on First Avenue. 

    The kid’s bike race is only along Avalon Avenue.

    Volunteers will be at the street ends to stop cars and pedestrians from crossing during the bike races.  Plan you Avalon Coffee and Kohler’s run accordingly 😉

  • Free T-Shirt 🙂

    Are you available this Saturday, July 2nd between 7- 9am?  “Street Police” volunteers are needed at street ends (between 8th and 38th Streets) to prevent traffic from entering and/or crossing Avalon Avenue and First Avenue during the annual Islandman Triathlon  http://www.timkerrcharities.org/

    There will be over 500 participants in this sold out event: a 1/4 mile ocean swim; the 12 mile closed course bike race (when you see the speeds, you will understand the need for closed roadways!); and the 5K boardwalk/beach run.

    All volunteers receive a 2011 Islandman Triathlon t-shirt as a thank you 🙂

  • Seashore Sales

    Avalon and Stone Harbor, NJ sale statistics for the past 30 days:

    29 properties SOLD, with an overall median selling price of $990,000. 

    8 condo/townhouse units sold ranging from $462,000 for a row house style unit on 14th Street in Avalon, to $1,215,000 for a bay front townhouse.

    19 single family homes sold ranging from $490,000 for a small cottage on an undersized lot, to $3,050,000 for a custom home on the bay in Stone Harbor.  The median selling price for single family homes: $1,470,000.

    In addition, one commercial space sold for $65,000; and a vacant lot in the southend of Avalon sold for $1,300,000.  21 sales for Avalon; 8 sales for Stone Harbor.

    Currently, there are 33 properties SALE PENDING with settlement scheduled for the near future.

  • “Where do you really live?”

    A question I have answered numerous times (twice this week in fact).  

    A look of confusion is common. “Isn’t it (pick an adjective) isolating, dreary, quiet, creepy, boring in the winter?” 

    Then to the follow up question: “Where are you from originally?”  When I answer “Avalon”, it’s certainly not what they are expecting.  How can somebody be from the shore?? 

    This is when I feel obligated to mention that we love to travel (to clarify that I can drive over the bridge!) and feel so fortunate to live by the beach.

    Avalon and Stone Harbor: my family history, my childhood, my place of business, and my home.  Proud to share it with you, too.
