Noticed this sign at the END of Dune Drive in Avalon– right before the jetty rocks at the inlet.
Otherwise, how would the rider know to stop and turn around??

Boats on Trailers
From the Avalon Home & Land Owner Newsletter:Many complaints have been received in recent years about the number of boat and watercraft trailers on the streets during the busy summer months when parking spaces are at a premium.
As a result Borough Council unanimously passed an ordinance restricting the parking of these trailers on residential streets form June 1 through September 30 each year. This restriction applies to boat or watercraft trailers whether attached or not and regardless of whether a boat or watercraft is on the trailer, on any municipal, state or county roadway during this time frame.
In addition anyone who wants to park a boat or watercraft trailer on the street between October 1 and May 31 must “park in front of, and immediately adjacent to the curb or property line of the property owned by the trailer owner, or occupied by the trailer owner as a tenant under a written lease with the owner of the property.”
Signs will be posted at the entrances to the Borough indicating these restrictions and a public awareness campaign will be initiated prior to the tourist season. Information will also appear on the Borough website.

Childhood Traditions
Kohler’s Bakery has been a fixture in Avalon for 61 years. Walking in their store is like a trip back in time…the old fashioned display cases and familiar smells. Sticky buns (and sometimes crumb cake or donuts) were a Sunday tradition throughout my childhood.
Glad to welcome them back for another summer season.  Enjoying a cream donut as I write this post!

What’s Selling?
Avalon/ Stone Harbor: 17 properties SOLD during the past 30 days; with 28 SALE PENDING and scheduled for closing.
The SOLD properties ranged from $350,000 (an undersized lot in Stone Harbor) to $3,660,000 (a southend Avalon beach block custom home). The median selling price was $1,175,000. The majority of the sales were single family homes (8) , followed closely by condos/townhouse units (6). There were 2 vacant lots, and 1 duplex (on a large lot- so sold basically for land value).

Lois Lane, Avalon
Now I know. I’ve passed this sign almost every day without knowing why the 50th Street beach path is called “Lois Lane”. Well, I just met Lois in person, and she shared her story.10 years ago, her kind 52nd Street neighbors threw her a surprise birthday party and presented the sign as a thank you for her efforts to improve the walkway through the dunes. The Borough of Avalon worked with the neighbors and granted permission for the new sign.
Lois is very proud of “her” beach path and loves living in Avalon year round.

Avalon/Sea Isle City Beach Fill

On Wednesday, April 21st, the mayors of Avalon and Sea Isle City met on the Townsends Inlet Bridge for a coin toss…seriously. The outcome determined which town would be first to receive sand from the joint beach fill project starting in May. Great Lakes Dock and Dredge Company did not have a preference on a starting location, so the mayors agreed that a coin toss would be the best way to decide.
After Avalon’s victory, the gracious mayor of Sea Isle City said he wasn’t disappointed, and “everybody’s a winner” with replenished beaches in time for the height of the summer season.
In Avalon, sand will be pumped on the beaches between 9th to 26th Streets; in Sea Isle City, 73rd through 94th Streets.

Southern Beaches
Back from a one week vacation from work (and the computer).This picture was taken on Tybee Island, GA (outside Savannah). The colorful pole warns residents and visitors of the potential flood level associated with a hurricane. Even a moderate category 2 hurricane showed a flood surge over my head! Yikes.
On to unusual real estate (of course I have to study the market in other beach communities): on Hilton Head Island, there is a small bridge to Deer Island- with free standing “Sea Lofts” along the marsh. Very different!Â
Hilton Head Island is beautiful.  Bike riding is the preferred means of transportation (including along the hard sand on the beach- a real treat with the wind at your back!)The homes are built to complement the wooded environment- earth tones and natural building materials.Â
Driving to work today, I realized the biggest difference between Avalon/ Stone Harbor and Hilton Head Island – the sky. The trees on HHI block the hot summer sun, but also make it darker on a cloudy day. I really appreciated the open feel as I drove along Dune Drive this morning. Good to be back!

 The strong winds are blowing the white blooms off of the Bradford Pear trees lining Dune Drive in Avalon– it looks like snow flakes swirling around! -

Last year, I was unable participate in the organized event, so I brought a trash bag on my morning walk before work.  I was disappointed how much I collected in a short period of time.  Does that mean we don’t notice the trash otherwise…or do we choose to look the other way?  Imagine the progress with hundreds of volunteers along the Jersey Shore.
