    CapeMay3For many of us, visits to Cape May are limited to the beach side promenade or one of the many popular restaurants.

    Now that my mother lives in Cape May full time, I am better able to appreciate the character of this charming city.

     

     

     

    CapeMayIf you enjoy looking at houses (and who doesn’t?), walk the side streets around town.  There are gingerbread cottages, Victorian mansions, and grand old beach homes.  The upkeep must be overwhelming- it takes a special person to respect the history of a home and live with imperfection!

  • January Thaw

    iceonjettyTemperatures are expected to soar in to the 40’s over the next few days!

    That will help with sale and rental activity during the 3 day weekend  🙂

  • Ode to Sisters

    sistersI’m one of 4 sisters, born within a 6 year span (a fine example of the rhythm method at work!). 

    We were fortunate to be raised at the beach (our summer friends would ask if we had class on the beach instead of inside a school).  We made forts in the dunes (sorry- that was wrong) and the back bay was our swimming hole.

    We never consider a “beach day” a waste of time-  and have passed along our love for the shore to the next generation.

    As we face the 1/2 century mark together (gulp), the beach has been our constant.  It’s our place to talk, laugh, walk ,and eat snacks without guilt.  And, it’s the place that holds our best family memories.  

    A sentimental thought for the January birthday girls…plus the oldest one in the lead since May  🙂

  • Avalon, Sea Isle City Beach Fill

    12thnorthAccording to an article posted on  http://www.987thecoast.com/   Avalon and Sea Isle City received an acceptable  bid for a joint beach fill project scheduled for this spring. The beaches from 9th Street south to 26th Street in Avalon will be replenished with 500,000 cubic yards of sand.  In Sea Isle City, 700,000 cubic yards of sand will replenish 73rd to 94th Streets.  Great news just in time for our 2010 summer season!

  • I’m Waiting…

    June09I was looking through pictures on my computer, and this one from last summer made me smile (of course!)

    I  couldn’t post another COLD beach picture today…I want to be warm and think of better weather days ahead.

  • Snow on the Beach

    snowonbeachLooks pretty…but I have to admit, I didn’t stay outside for long.   The cold, northwest winds are a deterrent to a walk on the beach!

  • Closing Schools

    The year round residents of the island communities are facing the reality of change.  Fewer families with children live on the barrier islands, a fact that is reflected in the school enrollment numbers.  Talks of consolidation within the districts have taken a more serious tone- it’s a very emotional subject.

    The locals are shocked by the just announced June closing of Wildwood Catholic High School– the only Catholic high school in Cape May County.  Class size is down 50% from just 10 years ago, and they no longer have the financial ability to remain open.

    The business person in me understands – especially after facing the past few years of a tough real estate market.  The income/debt ratio must make sense, and you have to be prepared to make difficult decisions.

    But our schools are part of our identity and history.  It’s very hard to see that fade away.  Wildwood Catholic is a tradition for generations of area families.   It’s where I met my husband, and then years later, watched our sons compete at sporting events.  The good and bad experiences shaped our lives, and hopefully, made us better people along the way.

    frozenbay2The frozen bay area is limited to the smaller basins and coves.  The wind and tides have kept the main channels flowing- so far.

  • January Weather

    trashcansWindy and cold…high winds and cold temperatures…some sun and cold winds…you get the picture!

    Instead of a wind chill factor, we worry about trash can velocity.    The roaming cans create hazardous driving conditions as we try to guess the direction of the roll 😉

  • Review of a Decade

    I enjoyed this editorial because the author referenced my favorite children’s book: “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”.
