Avalon, NJ- The beach fill project is progressing south. Tractors are building dunes and spreading the newly pumped sand to create a wide beach.

http://timkerrcharities.org/ Are you available Saturday morning, July 3rd between 7- 9? Volunteers are needed at street ends (between 8th and 38th Streets) to prevent traffic from entering and/or crossing Avalon Avenue and First Avenue during the Islandman Triathlon.
There will be over 400 participants in this sold out event: a 1/4 mile ocean swim; the 12 mile closed course bike race (when you see the speeds, you will understand the need for closed roadways!); and the 5K boardwalk/beach run.
All volunteers receive a 2010 Islandman Triathlon t-shirt as a thank you 🙂

As of April 1st, 2010 the revised pedestrian safety law has been put into effect. New Jersey Statute 39:4-36 states: “The driver of a vehicle must stop and stay stopped for a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.†It is important to note that this revised law requires drivers to stop and stay stopped for pedestrians until they have exited the crosswalk.
New Jersey Statute 39:4-36 also states: “no pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield.â€
Confusion continues between pedestrians/drivers. Please be careful!
Summer Saturday routine: Up early. Sneakers & iPod for a beach walk. On my way down the block, I watch families pack up cars to check out of their rental properties. Hurry to work. Prepare for appointments and incoming tenants. Get everyone settled in (they will be thrilled with this weekend’s beach weather!)Â
Saturday night- tenants out on decks enjoying the start of their vacation…and, the noise level in our neighborhood goes up a few notches 😉
Small fish create turbulence in the ocean just beyond the wave break. Dolphins are following close behind. An osprey flys over head and dives in for his share. And a seagull walks along the water’s edge with a live crab dangling from his beak.Â

It has felt like summer for many weeks now…and yet we are only 1/2 way through June. This Saturday will be our first big rental check in day.

Quick…what is the name of this local road? In Avalon, it’s Dune Drive.  South of 80th Street, it’s Second Avenue. Likewise with Ocean Drive (Avalon) and Third Avenue (Stone Harbor). Say the wrong name, and the locals notice!
Other helpful definitions: The inlet is the northern tip of Avalon facing Townsends Inlet; the point is the southern end of Stone Harbor over looking Great Channel and Hereford Inlet (toward North Wildwood). A gully is a salt water “swimming pool” for kids at the beach. Off shore is anywhere off of the island- as in “I have to go to the Acme off shore”. The lagoon area is out 42nd Street in Avalon to the neighborhood of bay front homes. The dune area is between 40th and 57th Street- designated paths through the high dunes lead to the beach. Nun’s Beach is officially on 111th Street, Stone Harbor in front of the Villa Maria by the Sea Retreat House- but the title also refers to the surfing beach on 110th Street.
