Grab your beach chair, umbrella, and a good book. That’s my plan after work!
Foggy Morning
Sincere statement: There is nothing more peaceful than an early morning beach walk in the heavy fog…(now, for the sarcasm) until, a barking German Sheppard appears out of the mist!
Just as my heart rate returned to normal, a Great Dane lumbered onto the beach. Seriously?
I recently shared my dog experiences with a member of Borough Council, and received a quick response from the Chief of Police.  He agreed that the regulations are not clear to our visitors (leashed dogs are only permitted on Stone Harbor beaches from 7pm to sunset). And, the leash laws need to be enforced.
I appreciate the difficult role of the police force- a fine line between ambassadors and enforcers. So my mission is to share the point of view of the “dog-less” walkers and ask dog owners to abide by the leash laws 😉
Keeping Cool
Follow the lead of the beach birds…and stay close to the water’s edge this week.
It’s breezy today- not a sea breeze, but windy enough to take the edge off the heat. Watching the flags above Hoy’s 5 & 10 (from my air conditioned office) -it looks like a steady west wind.
Kayaking with Dolphins, etc.
I kayak in the bay several times a week. It’s good exercise; and my biggest challenges are the wind (causing a choppy current), or the gnats 😉
The ocean is different. Even on a calm day, the waves can catch you off guard and topple the boat. A large, solid molded plastic item crashing into you as you tumble in the surf… hurts!
So why bother? The dolphins.
There is nothing more amazing than a large group of dolphins swimming within a few feet. They are larger and louder (breathing through their blow hole) than you expect.
This morning, I paddled through several huge schools of smaller fish- not sure of the species- the only one I can reference is piranha! The fish were swimming close to the surface, and splashing around.  And of course, I wondered what was chasing THEM! Thankfully, the dolphins were following nearby to make my adventure complete.
P.S. Informed by a serious fisherman- what I saw this morning: “king fish”…not  piranha! Good news 🙂
Cooler by a Mile
Avalon’s slogan applies today…definitely cool and comfortable at the shore.
Do you know anyone looking for a last minute vacation on Seven Mile Beach? We have properties available in Avalon and Stone Harbor!
Please call me 609-967-7950 or e-mail ann@anndelaney.comÂ
I appreciate the opportunity to help!
Nice View
No major news to report…just wanted to share a nice photo taken last night.
What started as a walk after dinner for exercise, ended with a pit stop at Springer’s. Oh well. Guess we can call it even 🙂
Sunday Sights
Early birds staking their spot on the beach this morning.Â
Clear blue skies, and a comfortable north breeze-Â should be an ideal beach day.
Another “BYOF” (bring your own fan) day at work while we wait for a part to arrive for the air conditioner. In the meantime, wilted real estate agents are doing their best to help customers 😉
Dogs on the Beach
Like most seashore towns, Avalon and Stone Harbor have restrictions for dogs on the beach.
In Avalon, leashed dogs are permitted on the the beach only in the off season-Â between September 30th and March 1st.
Stone Harbor allows leashed dogs on the beach between 7pm and sunset from June 1st through September 30th; and this year, installed doggie clean up bag dispensers at some beach paths.Â
Now for my rant: my early morning walks on the beach technically should be “dog free”.  I am not a dog owner, but I understand the appeal of taking a dog for a run on the beach, or a swim in the ocean.  And dog owners may genuinely feel they can control their pet, and therefore, remove the leash.
Unfortunately, when a dog is charging at me, I see aggression. I don’t believe “he is just saying hello”, or “she won’t hurt you”.  I have even tried Dog Whisperer techniques- avoid eye contact, walk farther away, make the chhhhttt noise…without success. My fear may not seem rational to the dog owner, but it’s based on prior experiences with other “friendly” dogs.
So I will appeal to my readers. If you own a beach dog, please follow the local leash laws. It will make for happier blog posts 😉
The Lure of the Lifeguard Stand
A cumbersome structure made of heavy, painted white lumber.
Designed for practical purposes…certainly, not for comfort.
And yet at 5pm, when the stands are moved back to the soft sand, kids (young and old) gather for their chance to sit on the  seat of honor.

Sweet and Sweat
Sweat: Sauna like weather today…even by the water. I keep the thermostat in my house set at 78 degrees (I’m eco-friendly…and cheap!)- it felt like a refrigerator when I returned from my walk.
Keep cool. Sea breeze expected later today 🙂
