Based on personal sightings, there are at least 2 Snowy owls on 7 Mile Beach. Â One has taken up residence at Stone Harbor Point, and another spotted in the Avalon high dune area, (and flying down along the southend beach).
Yesterday, we saw one at 83rd Street (perched on the fence post by the path). Â This one looked smaller than others, so guessing it may be a third owl??

Yes…another cold day at the shore. Â Yes…that’s ice on the beach. Â Yes…we are officially ready for more reasonable weather to return!
Better today- less wind and bright sunshine. Â Warming us up to a balmy 18 degrees!
An incredible mist swirling over the ocean this morning.
Full disclosure: I observed this from inside my warm house…and with binoculars.
ALMOST makes me want to layer up and walk down to the beach. Almost… 😉

The island is a bit more active with the 3 day weekend. Â Nice to see lights on in houses!

When a new business opens on the island, and boldly proclaims their plan to stay open year-round, the local residents shrug. Â We have heard it many times before…only to see the “Closed” sign on the door by late October.
Our pessimism is based on experience. Â Yet, is that pessimism also contributing to the winter closure?
Obviously it’s a supply/demand issue (especially with restaurants). Â Cape May manages to reach beyond its town borders to attract patrons…shouldn’t Avalon and Stone Harbor be able to do the same?
This subject is on my mind because of recent visits to The Reeds.  The owners are making an effort to attract the “winter crowd” with a reasonable bar menu and lunch specials.  Like Congress Hall in Cape May, they hope to become the town “living room” in the off season.
So this is my low key plug for all of the island businesses that stay with us year round. Â We will show our appreciation, and spread the word.
