How to Help?

There’s a feeling of helplessness as we watch the horrific flooding in Texas.

After Sandy,  many local organizations mobilized to help – and we felt confident contributing because we were familiar with those charities and groups.

For Harvey, I’m relying on trusted Twitter friends for guidance.

In addition to the Red Cross, the Houston Food Bank  was mentioned by several Houston area residents.

Mail donations to 535 Portal Street, Houston, TX 77029 or donate on line.

Life along the coast

During my beach walk this morning, I thought about those living along of coast of Texas .

Ironically, Facebook Memories for today show my posts of our family evacuating prior to Hurricane Irene 6 year ago.  It was a mandatory evacuation, and especially stressful occurring during the busy summer season.

Our area was lucky, and we all returned to normal life within a few days.

While thinking about the storms we’ve come to know on a first name basis (Gloria, Hugo, Bob, Irene, Sandy,  and even winter storm Jonas), our hearts are with others in similar (or as with Harvey, much worse) situations.

All beautiful coastal areas have their share of weather related risks.  But I can’t imagine living away from the water…

Cedar Island Swim, Avalon

Update:  A fun drone video of the 2017 race- click here

Sunday, August 27th is the annual Cedar Island 5K Swim.  The race starts at 12:40pm at the Avalon Yacht Club.  Swimmers head south along the main channel before turning east along the 20th Street waterway, and then north along Ocean Drive and back to the Yacht Club.

Cheer for the swimmers along the way.  I will be in my red kayak as a volunteer (trying to keep up with the swimmers!)

On the following Sunday, September 3rd, the annual Tim Kerr 7 Mile Island Run and 5K Run/Walk  takes place at 8:30am.

The Pressure!

After this weekend, there will be a noticeable change on the island: fewer tenants and summer residents due to college and high school schedules.

It’s darker in the morning…and the sun is setting a bit earlier each evening.  And Labor Day is right around the corner 🙁

Most critical- we realize there’s limited time to visit our favorite seasonal restaurants.  Oh, the burden…

Last night: Fuze Italian in Avalon.  Excellent meal and service (we were obviously there early!)

Wishing for Peace…

It’s hard for me to fathom the level of hate on display in Charlottesville.

My sheltered life on this island is one of the reasons I value the opportunity to travel.

Meeting people around the world verifies that we are all more alike than different.

Kindness transcends languages…and I am grateful for those experiences.

Peace

Weather – flooding

Reposting due to today’s forecast of heavy rain:

July 17, 2017

I have written several posts about elevation along our 7 mile island;  mainly after hearing the common boast from a home owner that their property is on “the highest point of the island”.

Ironically, one of my tenants heard the opposite after the Friday night rain storm.  A neighbor (not sure if he is an owner) said the area was the lowest point of the island (not true- but that’s a scary statement for a tenant to hear).

So when our phones start to beep with a weather warning, and the town blasts the flood siren, what should we do?

By the time we hear the “move your car to higher ground” message, some of the lower sections may already be experiencing moderate flooding.

Both Avalon and Stone Harbor distribute flood elevation maps to residents with our tax bills.  The color coded areas show the low and high sections of our community.

Yet, visitors and newer property owners are not aware of the “higher ground” locations.

Some basics:

1) It may defy logic, but the blocks closer to the beach are typically “higher ground” (although the street in the beach block of 21st Street flooded Friday evening- so it’s not an exact science).

2) Many sections of Ocean Drive/Third Avenue will flood during a heavy rain event.

3) Dune Drive in the Avalon business district has experienced flooding in recent years.

4) The Stone Harbor business district is also vulnerable during storms- best to park closer to Second Avenue.

5) Water in the street may be combination of rain and salt water (from the bay)- damaging to cars either way.

6) Trucks or raised vehicles that are able to clear the water cause wakes that send flood waters into the ground level structures/businesses.

7) Parking a car in a driveway or parking lot is always preferred over street parking because the rain water will accumulate by the storm drains.

Thankfully, the water will drain quickly once a storm passes.

If you have any questions about a particular area of town, I am happy to provide information based on my experience.
