Shades of Blue

MarchBlueA brilliant blue sky, a cool blue ocean, and a light blue piece of sea glass.  All part of my walk this morning.

Also noticed:  I had to stop while crossing the street toward the beach.  2 bicyclists riding south and a jogger heading north. Practically a traffic jam!

Signs of Spring

1) Avalon Coffee is back open (weekends)- across from my office on 29th and Dune Drive.  There are tables and chairs outside for soaking  up the sun!

2) An increase in rental bookings for summer 2010.  It’s the ideal time to plan your seashore vacation.

3) The anticipation of “opening soon” signs on  local restaurants and shops.  St. Patrick’s Day weekend and Easter week are the next big target dates.  Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner…

Favorite House?

We’ve lived in many different homes over the years- a mix of old and new…and all within a few miles of the others.  While I still love our current “beach house” built  just 5 years ago, I also admire so many other island homes.  I tend to select a new favorite every few months!

92ndStMy latest infatuation?  A charming home under construction on 92nd Street.   The architecture reminds me of the story book cottages in Carmel, CA.  Interesting exterior trim detail, and a modest sized structure- well suited for the lot and neighborhood.

Grateful for the mild temperatures to encourage my walks…and house stalking  🙂

Sand Sculptures

sandMarchMother Nature left her mark on the beach.  Higher than average tides and a turbulent ocean carved interesting designs into the sand.

Wires Down

A reminder to Avalon and Stone Harbor property owners: there are many cable and phone wires down from the February ice/snow storm.  Comcast and Verizon may be waiting to hear from the home owner before making the repairs.

March 1st

100_1480Wanted to post a “spring like” picture this morning.  The 55th Street Bay Park in Avalon will see a few boaters back in the water by next month.  Counting down to warmer days 🙂

Sunday Sun/Snow

sunsnowTemperatures close to the 40’s inspired a walk on the beach this morning.  Snow flurries competed with the sun breaking through the clouds.

Thoughts of Hawaii

HawaiiDuring our vacation in Hawaii last September, we noticed the “Tsunami Evacuation Area” signs and the poles with warning sirens along the coastal roads.

We also saw a memorial on the Big Island for a small village and school devastated by a tsunami.

As fellow island residents, we respect the power of the ocean- yet can’t imagine this particular event.   It must be especially frightening for the tourists on the islands.

P.S.  Reading first person accounts of preparations on the islands via   www.twitter.com      Interesting to hear from those on vacation.

Saturday- 7 pm-  A related comment about the evacuation and warnings in Hawaii:   It’s their tourist season, and the emergency management people were prepared for the worst.   Here at the Jersey Shore, a rare late summer hurricane warning has to be treated with the same level of caution.  The safety of our vacationers and home owners comes first.
