Beach Wear

It’s a gradual transition: shorts to work out pants.  Long sleeve t-shirts to turtle necks; then a fleece jacket.  The knit hat/light weight gloves- switched out with warmer options as needed. The cotton socks replaced with wool socks.  The heavier, dorky…I mean warm…pants.  Hiking shoes (originally purchased for a trip to Ireland-  great for beach walking and much warmer than sneakers).

This morning- my final wardrobe change: the serious LL Bean winter jacket!

Perfect fall weather this weekend- fewer layers will be needed later today and tomorrow 😉

2011 Festival of Trees

The 7Mile Business Community Association is coordinating a new event for Thanksgiving weekend.

Local businesses were asked to decorate a Christmas tree with a theme of their choice.  The trees will be available to view at the Whitebrier in Avalon starting Wednesday 11/23 at 5pm.  Final bidding (silent auction) will take place on Friday, 11/25 (before and after the town Christmas Tree Lighting on Veteran’s Plaza, 21st Street).

The proceeds from this event will help defray the cost of the the family events scheduled for Festive Friday: http://www.avalonboro.org/news/fall-news/Festive-Friday.html  or   http://indulgeinavalon.com/

Stop by the Whitebrier to see the unique tree by the Power Play team (surprise…we have a hockey theme!)

A House Lift

Flood elevation requirements in Avalon and Stone Harbor factor into a homeowner’s decision to renovate or build new.

Older structures typically fail to meet the current requirements on 2 key points: crawl space venting and elevation of the first level.  Smart Vents are a reasonable solution for crawl space venting.  Unfortunately, if the first floor height is below code, renovations may be limited.

If a homeowner plans to renovate more than 50% of the value of structure (the tax assessment of the “improvements”), the construction official will require the structure be brought up to code.   This is why some homeowners elect to tear down what looks like a perfectly functional home.

The Stone Harbor house pictured is in the process of extensive renovations…including raising the first floor level to comply with elevation codes.

Good Morning

Incredible colors in the sky at sunrise and sunset recently.   Another pretty fall day at the shore.

Walk or Drive?

This is my concern:  with the beach permit, will we wimp out of our winter beach walks?

I took this picture Friday night at sunset…from inside the Jeep!  It was windy and cold, but I wanted to watch the colorful sunset and moonrise.

I answered my own question yesterday morning.  As I ventured outside for the newspaper, the moon was still bright over the bay.  The sun was up, so I hurried back out for a long walk along the beach before work.

Will try to find the balance of comfort, and fresh air in the coming months 🙂

I’m Back…

Computer issue resolved after a full work day without access to my blog…a major crisis!

Regular posts will resume tomorrow.  Thanks for waiting.

In the meantime, check out the new issue of Seven Mile Times   http://www.7miletimes.com/ , specifically page 26. Fun article about the wild turkey living in the dune area of Avalon.  That’s my picture of the turkey from a blog post: https://anndelaney.com/2010/11/22/the-avalon-turkey/

Also, turn to pages 40/41.  Christmas  1976 in Avalon and Stone Harbor remembered.  Dave Coskey asks “Where were you in 1976?”  And I wonder “How did 35 years go by so fast?”   A trip down memory lane…

Random Thoughts…

It may be a 5 hour drive from Avalon, NJ to State College, PA, yet it’s like we are neighbors.  Penn State alumni, fans, and families of students regularly vacation on the island. It’s not unusual to see the familiar blue and white Penn State flag proudly displayed at summer homes.

I can’t tell you how many times potential buyers have asked me to drive them by Joe Paterno’s home.   Sports figures are common shore “celebrities”, and become part of our community.

The emotional response to the Penn State news is far reaching…even miles away by the beach.
