Tour de Avalon

TourdeDuneThe popular 7 mile bike path through Avalon and Stone Harbor – it’s like watching the shore stage  of Tour de France 😉

Happy 4th!

LifeguardStoneHarborKeep cool, drive carefully, and enjoy the fireworks tonight (in Avalon off 30th Street; in Stone Harbor off 81st Street).

My “commute” took a few extra minutes this morning- the shore version of rush hour: church letting out, pedestrian traffic heading to Avalon Coffee, cars looking for parking near Uncle Bill’s, etc.   😉

The End of the Point

pointTook a REALLY long walk yesterday to the very south end of the south end of Stone Harbor Point.

Boaters have discovered this quiet stretch of sand as their private beach.

By the way, the condo building on the left side of the picture is in North Wildwood-  a good perspective of how far south the sand extends at the point.

Shore Fashion

NunsBeachWhat’s the most popular line of clothing in Stone Harbor?  It has to be “Nun’s Beach” logo wear.

Who could predict (other than Sister James) such a demand for the colorful t-shirts, sweatshirts, and baseball caps?

A talented artist who owns a summer home in Stone Harbor creates a new design each year- this is the 15th edition.

Stop by the Nun’s boutique (the garage behind the Villa Maria retreat house) on 111th and Second Avenue.   Open every morning 🙂

Weekend Fireworks

flagIf Sunday is a clear night, you will be able to see fireworks from almost every location on the island.

The Avalon celebration starts with a concert inside Community Hall at 6pm; and fireworks off the beach at 30th Street around 9pm.  Great viewing right on the beach a few blocks north or south of 30th Street.

The 80th Street field in Stone Harbor will be active all day with family events.  Live music starts at dusk, and fire works off the beach around 9:30pm.  Bring beach chairs/blanket and secure your spot on the lawn early!

Volunteers Needed

http://timkerrcharities.org/  Are you available this Saturday, July 3rd between 7- 9am?  “Street Police” volunteers are needed at street ends (between 8th and 38th Streets) to prevent traffic from entering and/or crossing Avalon Avenue and First Avenue during the Islandman Triathlon.

There will be over 500 participants in this sold out event: a 1/4 mile ocean swim; the 12 mile closed course bike race (when you see the speeds, you will understand the need for closed roadways!); and the 5K boardwalk/beach run.

All volunteers receive a 2010 Islandman Triathlon t-shirt as a thank you 🙂

Please let me know if you can help…and your preferred location.  Thanks!

P.S.  Do you know a student who needs service hours?  Volunteers can earn 5 hours- Midge Kerr will provide documentation for the students after the race.  Contact Midge@TimKerrCharities.org for more information.

Sand Shark

sandsharkWatched this young lady reel in a 45″ sand shark last evening.  She was fishing with her grandfather, mother, and sisters- and very excited about her catch.

As the daughter of a surf fisherman, it brought back memories of time spent at the water’s edge by my father’s side.  His daughters didn’t  have the same enthusiam – but he was a good sport teaching us to bait a hook, cast, and clean the fish (yuck).

These girls took turns confidently holding the fish after the grandfather removed the hook.  And, then they set the sand shark free.

What NOT to Do

rainSeriously…thunderstorms at the shore have the same risks as those back in the “real world”.  Just to clarify, here’s a list of what NOT to do during a storm:

Ride your bike; jog along Dune Drive; walk on the beach; expect your open deck umbrella to withstand the high winds; walk your dog.

Trash day adds to the fun- several recycling containers blew over- creating an obstacle course of bottles and cans 😉

Thankfully, the sun has returned- a beautiful evening.
